Bio: Carol lei Breckenridge
Carol lei Breckenridge, Farver Professor of Music at Central College in Pella, Iowa, obtained Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in piano from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, studying with William S. Newman and Marvin Blickenstaff, and the Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa, studying with Kenneth Amada. She is a specialist in Classical-era keyboard music and has become an active recitalist and lecturer on fortepiano and clavichord. During the 1997-98 year, she studied fortepiano and Classical style with Malcolm Bilson through a Fellowship at Cornell University, and researched 18th-century keyboard music.
In 1999, Dr. Breckenridge performed a clavichord program as part of a C.P.E. Bach Symposium at Cornell University, and was included on the 1995 International Clavichord Symposium in Magnano, Italy. In 1999, she gave the inaugural recital of a new Swedish clavichord at the National Music Instrument Museum in South Dakota, and in 2002 dedicated a new French double harpsichord for the University of Nebraska-Omaha. During the summer of 2002, she gave masterclasses in clavichord and piano at the University of Transylvania in Brasov, Romania. Articles include "The Fortepiano and Classical Style" (Clavier) and "Haydn’s Keyboard Instruments and Sonatas" (Iowa Music Teachers). Her recording with Kristin Thelander (natural horn/fortepiano), "Music of the Early Nineteenth Century," was released by Crystal Records in 1992. Lecture topics have included: "C.P.E. Bach and Classical Styles," "Music of Josef Steffan," and "Late Eighteenth-century American Piano Music: The First Generation." Dr. Breckenridge is also author of Guide to Classical-Era Keyboard Music for Piano Teachers and Students.
